Post Fracture Physiotherapy

IMG-20161025-WA0021

Rehabilitation is about enabling and supporting individuals to recover, achieve their full potential and to live full and active lives as possible.

So, if you have suffered from a recent fracture, keep in mind that early physiotherapy treatment is extremely important in ensuring you make a speedy full recovery.

It is safe to begin physiotherapy as early as immobilization with casting/bracing/splinting is done. It’s safe to begin with mild range of motion exercises with the cast/splints on to avoid stiffness & restrictions in movements later.

We plan a rehabilitation program taking into account the person’s needs & lifestyle. Using techniques including specific exercises and general fitness programmes, our aim is to reduce any swelling, regain full muscle power and joint movement and to bring back full function in earliest time.

Our program during fracture healing will concentrate on –
• Promoting healing
• Encouraging weight bearing
• Maintaining strength of weakened muscles
• Maintaining range of movement of the affected and surrounding joints
• Reducing pain
• Reducing swelling

After your fracture has healed and/or your cast has been removed physiotherapy is continued for 3-12 months or until you have regained your full level of function.

The treatment will depend very much on the problems identified during your assessment, but may include of the following:

  • Soft tissue massage: particularly to manage edema and swelling
  • Scar management:  if the patient had surgery to fix the fracture
  • Ice therapy/Heat therapy
  • Stretching exercises: to avoid soft tissue tightness
  • Joint manual therapy and mobilizations: to assist in regaining joint mobility & joint range
  • Structured and progressive strengthening regime
  • Balance and control work and gait (walking) re-education where appropriate
  • Taping to support the injured area/help with swelling management
  • Return to sport preparatory work and advice where required
  • Advice about positioning of the limb as well as teaching exercises to avoid muscles wasting and to prevent stiff joints while still in plaster

We ensure that at our clinic, we provide therapy that helps you return to your optimum functional mobility as quickly as possible.
